Epilepsy Resources

Epilepsy is one of the most common diseases in the canine world.

Idiopathic epilepsy, the single most common canine seizure disorder, is reported to occur in anywhere from 0.5 to 5.7 percent of all dogs. (Thomas Graves, DVM)

The causes of seizures are widely varied, ranging from epilepsy to nervous system diseases or injury. In dogs, hyperthermia, poisoning, low blood sugar, nutritional deficiencies, distemper, intestinal parasites, low blood calcium after birthing, liver and kidney disease and thyroid problems may be underlying factors. In cats, convulsions may be linked to feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) toxoplasmosis, lymphosarcoma ( leukemia), thiamine deficiency, or heart disorder. (Mary L. Wulff-Tilford & Gregory L. Tilford)
